Programs / Land Rights

Land in Uganda belongs to the citizens of Uganda but only 16% of women out of the total population own land and the remaining 84% is owned by men as per the land registration records. This is the situation despite the fact that women are the main users and contributors to the total agricultural produce in the Country although normally the proceeds are always still owned and controlled by the men.

This situation of land ownership and utilization has continued to marginalize and violate women’s land ownership and use rights even though the legal and policy framework on land provides for the protection of these land rights. ADAW International strives to have a gender mainstreamed approach in advocating for the land rights of women including ownership, control and use of land through awareness raising research influencing policy formulation and advocacy on women’s land rights, supporting land documentation and ultimately enhancing women’s access to land through legal representation and other justice systems such as ADR and Traditional Justice System.
